symmetry with no function

i always pass by this small gallery in hayes valley. it just so happened that the window display was featuring new collective artists in collaboration. these artists had a three dimensional display of symmetrical patterns of triangles and circles crossing through each other... it was very repetitive and the colors were florescent. i stood there looking in from the outside window, trying to imagine the patterns and textures rotating and shifting 45 degrees, trying to make connections within the shapes. i lost interest in minutes, i couldn't see any reflectional symmetry in the patterns. i felt disappointed. i couldn't help questioning the reasoning behind the art piece. what importance does the work contribute if there is no functionality to it? but it did look cool and pretty and maybe that's all that really counts.
